Buying Seasonal Items On eBay
Would You Buy A Bikini In Winter?
I could save you a bit of time here: DON'T
buy goods that are seasonal at the time they are popular. Not if you want to get
a bargain, anyway. However, DO buy out-of-season goods that you will want
later in the year!
Most retail is quite simple; when a lot of people
want your product, you can generally sell it quite easily. In fact, you may even
have some control over the price. When very few people want your product, you
will have to work harder and, in fact, may have to drop the price to compete
with other sellers.
I sold bikinis in the UK, for example, I'd probably struggle in December. In
fact, I may well have to cut my prices to shift any at all. The only people
buying them will be those going on holiday and those forward-thinking enough to
buy some for the summer.
eBay auctions are the perfect example of a case
where demand decides the price, as there is no fixed price to begin with! YOU
can get the best deals by being that person who buys their bikini in the winter!
Here are a few examples of categories/products
that may well be affected by the seasons:
I started with an easy one, just to show what I'm on about. That said, there
were just under 38,000 items in the UK eBay Christmas Decoration section when I
looked today (May 23rd, 2012). Not surprisingly, many of them didn't
Tents & Other Camping
When the sun comes out, people start thinking about outdoor activities. The
camping section sees a huge turnover at that time of year, but take a look
through it when there is snow on the ground and it's a different story.
See above! Again, as soon as spring is in the air, the grass starts growing and
people wheel out their old lawnmowers, only to find they don't work. Higher
demand equals higher price – buy one in the winter!
I know quite a few boat owners and have been through the process of buying and
selling boats myself. It's simple, really – buy in the winter and sell in the
A very popular item on eBay, but don't buy them just before Christmas. Buy them
when it's scorching hot outside and everyone else is searching for sandals!
Obviously, there are loads more items that you can
think of that will be affected by the seasons, but the above should give you
some idea of what I'm talking about. With big items, such as boats, the
difference in price can be thousands of pounds and, to be honest, you may not
even bother thinking about buying 'out of season' with smaller stuff. Just try
not to buy a 4x4 vehicle when it starts snowing, or a caravan when the sun comes
out. Not if you want a bargain, anyway!
In summary: Getting the best bargains on
eBay, or anywhere for that matter, is about being in the right place at the
right time, with the money to back you up. Yes, but you can help by putting
yourself in the right place to see the bargains. One such way is to look for
things that nobody else wants right now. It's as simple as that.
Another great way of finding cheap eBay bargains is to look for items that haven't had many bids. Just because they haven't received bids, it doesn't mean they aren't any good! Quite often, the item will be poorly described, have a bad photo or just finish at an unsociable time. Use the drop down box below to find items in each category that finish soon and have had 3 bids or less:
And here's a favourite for many....the good old 99p auctions! A lot of people start their auctions at 99p or less, partly because they believe that they'll attract more attention if they do and partly because there are often promotional incentives to do so. The result is a LOT of items sell for a pound or less! Select a section below to see what I mean:
And here's one more trick to use. Type your search term into the box below. Select your postcode and distance you'll travel and get the results. If any of them take your fancy, check the descriptions and if it doesn't say that they'll accept collection in person, ASK THEM.
Not everybody does accept collection, but there is no harm in asking. I've bought plenty of stuff like this and you'll often find you can save a lot by cutting out the postage.

A few buying tips:
Only fools rush in - don't grab the first bargain you see...however tempting!
Don't avoid Ebay - if a seller asks you to buy direct, avoid them. You lose all your protection from Ebay.
Pay with PayPal - again, you get extra protection this way.
Read the small print - be SURE that you know what you're buying!
Make sure you can pick the item up - bulky items often need a van and some muscle!
Make sure you can store it - bulk deals sound great, but ever tried fitting a million widgets in your hallway?
Have fun - buying a cheap bargain can be great fun. Enjoy it!
